Pregnancy is an incredible journey filled with joy, even though it can bring some physical discomforts along the way. One such common challenge is tailbone pain, or coccydynia, which many expectant mothers experience. Grasping the causes of this pain and discovering how chiropractic care can provide relief is essential for easing discomfort. With the right support, many women can elevate their pregnancy experience and pave the way for a smoother childbirth!
Understanding Tailbone Pain in Pregnancy
Tailbone pain can be particularly troublesome during pregnancy, primarily due to changes in body alignment. Namely: the pelvis. As the body adapts, various factors contribute to this discomfort. One significant cause relates to lumbar and pelvic alignment.
Around the end of the first trimester, the body ramps up its production of the hormone relaxin, which helps the pelvis naturally open and expand for childbirth. However, this same hormone can cause misalignment in the hips and joints. When the pelvis shifts out of place—either rotated or uneven—it can create stress and irritation to the sacroiliac joints and surrounding spinal structures.
Research indicates that approximately 25% of pregnant women may experience more serious pelvic pain, with severe disability occurring in about 8%. That's significant. Lumbopelvic dysfunction, or irregular function and mobility, often leads to irritation or inflammation around the sacroiliac joints, radiating pain to the tailbone area, and considerable discomfort for many.
It is crucial to distinguish between tailbone pain and sacral pain to pursue effective treatment. Conditions like scoliosis, sciatica, or disc-related problems can cause pain that radiates to the tailbone due to inflamed or compressed nerves. Misalignment of the spine and pelvis can influence nerve pressure, leading to radicular symptoms (or nerve pain referral) to the sacrum, tailbone, hips, or down the legs.
Many women in my office point to their sacrum when they describe having 'tailbone pain.' This is typically a different issue. Sacral pain can happen in response to the pelvis shifting, putting stress and tension on the piriformis, sacrotuberous ligament, and other muscle and tendon structures attached to the sacrum. Nerve referral from the lower back is also a common cause of sacrum pain, as is the shifting of the sacrum itself, creating a 'tug of war' of sorts to the ligaments and fascia that connect from the sacrum to the uterus.
Conversely, tailbone pain frequently results from tension and pulling of the pelvic floor muscles and fascia, as the pelvis adjusts in preparation for labor. Pain in the tailbone area often appears due to nerve referral as well.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help
Chiropractic care offers a comprehensive method for addressing tailbone pain during pregnancy. Gentle adjustments by a chiropractor, particularly one skilled in prenatal care, can help reestablish spinal and pelvic alignment. Moreover, these adjustments are safe and comfortable! This realignment reduces torsional stress, reinstates proper mobility to the bony structures, and alleviates pressure on the ligaments, joints, and muscles connected to the tailbone and pelvis.
Chiropractors use specific techniques designed for pregnant women, including tailored adjustments, exercises, and stretches. For example, a study indicated that women who received chiropractic treatments during pregnancy reported a 50% reduction in low back pain compared to those who did not. By addressing misalignments, chiropractic care not only alleviates tailbone pain but also enhances overall mobility and comfort.
The primary goal of these adjustments is not only to align the pelvis and sacroiliac joints but also to reduce the increased lumbar curve often seen in pregnant women. This curve can create additional tension in the lower back, further exacerbating tailbone discomfort. Through chiropractic care, expectant mothers may experience improved relaxation and reduced discomfort—making everyday activities more manageable.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
The benefits of chiropractic care go well beyond simple pain relief. Multiple studies highlight how regular chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy can lead to numerous advantages, including:
Enhanced Comfort: Reduced pain in the tailbone and lower back significantly improves quality of life during pregnancy. Many women report feeling more relaxed and less stressed overall.
Better Birth Experience: Women who receive chiropractic care may experience shorter labor times. Additionally, these women commonly reported fewer complications during delivery.
Overall Well-being: Chiropractic care improves posture, balance, and mobility, which enhances an expectant mother’s general well-being. Improved posture alone can lead to a reduction in back and tailbone pain.
Easier Adjustment to Physical Changes: As the body transitions through each pregnancy stage, chiropractic interventions can facilitate smoother adaptations, helping avoid further discomfort.
Support for the Nervous System: By aligning the spine, chiropractic treatments help ensure optimal nerve function—crucial for both mother and baby’s health.
Expectant mothers should collaborate closely with their healthcare providers to create a safe and effective chiropractic treatment plan tailored to their needs.
